How Hamilton Lane Picks the Winners

Hamilton Lane, one of the most significant advisors to institutional investors with regard to their alternative investment portfolios, carefully tracks its huge fund flow. What does that flow say about the current state of the fundraising market? We asked Andrea Kramer, Managing Director of Hamilton Lane, to share her analysis. In the first of a multi-segment interview with Privcap, Kramer discusses key trends in the fundraising market, including the attempt of hedge funds to raise closed-end funds while asking for terms and conditions more common to the open-ended market. Kramer also discusses which first-time funds get taken seriously, why many LPs have an incorrect view of the lower-middle market, and why she keeps saying to fundraising GPs: “Exit, exit, exit. At the end of the day you need to show us some money.”
